Indian (Common) Myna Description

Appearance

Brown with black head; yellow beak and eye skin, yellow legs. Large white wing patches and under tail feathers best seen in flight.  

Size

23-25cm. Upright 12 cm tall.

Activity

Active by day, sleeps by night in large communal roosts.

Breeding

Mynas mate for life. Breeding in October to March. Usually considerable competition for nesting sites. Commonly nest in walls, ceilings and eaves of buildings. Natural hollows in trees are favoured, leading to increased pressure on native birds and hollow-dependent fauna. May aggressively displace other birds from nesting sites. Long lived.

Diet

Accomplished opportunistic scavengers, feeding on almost anything, including meat, food scraps, insects, fruit, grains, pet food, berries, and may eat the fledglings of other birds. Feeds mainly on the ground.

Nesting

Nests messy and made of variety of materials including grasses, rubbish, plastic, feathers, and leaves. Eggs blue.

Call

Voice a mix of loud, clear whistles and rattling
